Role Overview
The Senior Structural Engineer defines the structural design strategy for modular, prefabricated data centre units and associated civil works, holds technical sign-off authority, and mentors junior and intermediate engineers. The role leads complex structural analysis and design, including seismic considerations, owns compliance with the Eurocodes and Portuguese regulatory requirements, and leads liaison with fabricators, authorities, and clients from concept through commissioning across CTS's EMEA project portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Define the structural design strategy and standards for modular/prefabricated data centre units, plant rooms, and supporting civil and foundation works.
Provide technical authority and design sign-off for structural packages across assigned projects.
Lead structural analysis and design for complex steel and concrete structures, including seismic design considerations under Eurocode 8 where applicable.
Lead design risk assessments and value-engineering/optimisation reviews for structural scope, including modular transport and lifting load studies.
Lead multidisciplinary MEP/BIM coordination for structural scope and enforce modelling standards and BIM execution plans.
Oversee structural quality through fabrication, transport, and site erection; lead structural inspections and sign-off prior to dispatch and at practical completion.
Lead technical evaluation and negotiation with steel fabricators and specialist civil/structural subcontractors.
Mentor junior and intermediate structural engineers and review their design deliverables and calculations.
Liaise with authorities having jurisdiction, certifying bodies, and clients on structural compliance and certification matters.
Required Skills and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; Master's preferred.
5 to 15 years in structural engineering, including experience leading design for mission-critical, data centre, or modular/prefabricated construction projects.
Expert command of the Eurocodes (EN 1990–EN 1998) and the Portuguese national annexes, including seismic design.
Ordem dos Engenheiros Membro Efetivo (mandatory for sign-off).
Advanced proficiency across Tekla Structures, Revit Structure, Robot Structural Analysis, and STAAD.Pro/SAP2000.
Deep knowledge of structural steel design, modular transport/lifting load cases, and foundation design for industrial facilities.
Proven experience negotiating with fabricators and specialist subcontractors, including quality oversight through fabrication and erection.
Proven leadership, mentoring, and client/authority engagement skills.
